Glue is the substance that keeps the guitar together. Everybody agrees on that. When it comes to the different types of glues, the opinions vary. From traditional hide glue, fish glue, tight bond to high-tech epoxy glue. Does it influence the sound? Does it make a difference in stability? Are there differences when you build an electric guitar vs an acoustic guitar? Here are the answers.
Spanish luthier Iegend José Romanillos, entrepreneur Paul Reed Smith of PRS Guitars and pre-war Martin specialist TJ Thompson discuss the different types of glues and their effects on the sound and on the structural integrity of an acoustic guitar. Master builder Bernd Martin (Granada, Spain) shows how he uses hide glue in the traditional way building a classical guitar. In the second part TJ Thompson explains why he uses a $16,000 Conrad-Johnson stereo for glueing the braces, Americana legend Buddy Miller and master luthier Julius Borges talks about the importance of animal glue and master luthier Jörg Tandler voices his concerns in the stability of traditional glues in electric guitar making. Jam packed with information and insider knowledge.
