50 Years of the Gibson Les Paul We met Les Paul about two years ago in New York City to film his custom guitar video interview. Here is Les telling the story how he invented the electric guitar in 1941. Les was full of life and enjoyed talking to us. Despite his knowledge and enthusiasm, it still took him almost 10 years to convince a company to mass-produce this modern concept of a traditional instrument. Who would have thought back then, that the electric guitar would change the music and the lifestyle of the whole world?!
