Million Dollar Les Paul: In Search Of The Most Valuable Guitar In The World There is nothing more enchanting than a good guitar story. Gibson Les Paul Standards from 1958, 1959 and 1960 almost always guarantee a good story. Tom Wittrock tells the story of the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard which got chipped when the workers in the Gibson factory routed the body for the neck pickup. Obviously they painted the guitar black. A former owner stripped the guitar – including the serial number – and found the most beautiful flamed top. The guitar got refinished in cherry sunburst. After several days with the Master of Bursts we got hungry for more. About half a year later we met the Burst Brothers in Charlotte, NC. They told us their two favorite Burst stories. Wonderful and heart-warming. I dedicated the end of this feature to Mr. Les Paul himself. He added an interesting, yet entertaining story, about why the name Les Paul really got banished from the SG’s in 1963.
