PAUL REED SMITH 01 | TED McCARTY – How they built guitars in the 50’s

Ted McCarty was a true pioneer of the development of the electric guitar. He served as president of the Gibson Guitar Company from 1950 to 1966. In the late 1980’s Paul Reed Smith hired him as a consultant for PRS Guitars. He became a mentor and a true friend.

In May 2004 Gourmet Guitars was invited to Paul Reed Smith’s river house for a casual Saturday morning interview. One of the topics we talked about was the importance of mentors. Paul not only shared his thoughts about this subject he also shared some of the old stories Ted McCarty told him about the ways they used to build guitars in the “olden days”. This is how they really built guitars in the 1950’s. It is a piece of guitar history.  Enjoy.
